I would argue you need to know the fretboard more quickly with bass and that would help with playing guitar by playing bass first. I did play bass first so maybe I’m biased.

I want to get a bass, someone left me a fretless Yamaha a few years ago. I have never played bass before, would you suggest me getting a bass with frets to start, or would I be ok with the fretless? I have been thinking about getting a low cost Yamaha or Ibanez.

Hey Josh, I just started the VERY first step in becoming a bassist, that's clicking the Subscribe button! More serious, what's your pick for a "Blues" bass? (budget friendly) You have a number of videos about bass guitars in different price ranges, and even cover the ones for playing metal and rock, but what if a beginner is mostly interested in playing the Blues. Thanks!

There's this wonderful story I heard from Marcus Miller in an interview on UA-cam. When he was growing up the great musicians around him in New York followed a philosophy of growth because most of them didn't have much money and it solves this problem of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) in a heartbeat. This New York philosophy was the predominant approach in New York City according to Marcus and it drove excellence in the music community he was in. 'When you want a new sound to change things up because you're bored, do not buy new gear. Learn and practice new techniques." The sounds all come from the hands and the body. This approach grew out of a lack of funds. It made Marcus and all the musicians around Marcus become some of the best in the world. Put responsibility on oneself and not the gear.

Heh, for my first bass I chose 5-string fretless bass :) I don't regret it one bit. I do however know intermediate music theory, already play western, classic and electric guitars. I don't slap (yet). Also, I very, very rarely play lower notes than the low D, but I like the option to play on the 4-5th position, gives me much broader scale without moving my left hand around too much.

I'm a 56yo woman, and my husband has been playing guitar and bass since he was a teenager. I've always wanted to play the bass, and recently, I decided to try to learn to fulfill this life-long dream. My plan is to practice secretly at home while he is out and then one day (hopefully!) surprise him by playing his bass guitar when he walks in through the front door. LOL Other videos are hard to follow, but your explanations and demos are very clear and easy to understand. Thank you!

It's really interesting, I recently learned that our brain prefers louder sounds, so if you would compare two rather similar sounds but one is louder, most would pick the louder one. This phenomenon really pushed through in this comparison, I almost always tended towards the louder of the two (Disclaimer: extremely inexperienced bassist) Maybe it would be more optimal to have them at about the same volumes at these 1:1 comparisons? I know it's increadibly picky, this isn't a critique ;D just felt it here :)

Thank you so much for these introductory videos Josh! I really love your approach to teaching. You are not just showing the exercises but also constantly reaffirming beginners by telling them it's okay to microshift and to go slow in the beginning. This makes your lessons so much more motivating and beginner-friendly. I just got a bass for free off "Kleinanzeigen" (German craigslist) and I'm so happy that I found your videos because I feel like I have a good ressource for practicing now. I really really appreciate your work. <3
